Doing it the right way!

Reinstalling Windows XP

There really is a good order to follow when reinstalling Windows XP. You'll find a many links with ways to accomplish a reinstall, but none thatl worked better for me than following these simple steps.

I'm going to skip over formatting and partitioning, so we'll assume you have a clean drive to work with from this point on.

Depending on what you're using for a source disc (ex: XP CD prior to Service Packs), the steps are fairly easy, and almost guarantee success.

  1. Install Windows XP. Sounds kind of obvious doesn't it?

  2. Kill your internet connection. We don't want Windows looking for drivers, nor do we want any security exploits to screw us up.

  3. Start Windows Firewall. It's better than nothing.

  4. Install your Service Pack, 1 or 2 whatever you have available.

  5. Install your motherboard chipset drivers.

  6. Reconnect the internet and install any and all Security updates (nothing else at this point).

  7. Install any updates to DirectX.

  8. Install your video card drivers.

  9. Finally, install any remaining drivers needed.

At this point, and after verifying everything is in working order, I'd make a backup of my complete functioning XP system, so down the road I can start fresh without having to follow any of the above steps. Provided of course nothing major has changed. One excellent cloning/backup utility is Acronis True Image.

Good luck and have fun!
